Feed back from Pure Lotus Hospice
Mdm Yeo Gek Lin was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 and was hospitalized in Penang General Hospital. Her cancer spread to her right leg. She finds difficulty in her movement. Doctor advised to amputate her leg. On 26th April 2007, the operation took place.
One year late, in 2008, her cancer again spread to her right arm. There is a prominent lump on her arm. It was solid hard like a golf ball.
Rev of Pure Lotus, on her frequent visit to General Hospital saw Mdm Yeo. Upon hearing the Dr. wants to amputate Mdm Yeo’s right hand again, Rev approached the Doctor in charge to discharge Mdm Yeo to Pure Lotus Hospital so that Mdm Yeo can be cared there.
Although, there is a lump on her right arm, but Mdm Yeo is very positive about her condition. She remained cheerful and likes to talk and joke with people. The minute we walked in to Pure Lotus, her grin and smile is there to welcome Mitta volunteers. She and other patients of Pure Lotus; is always happy to see us and waited for us every Tuesday.
While doing Reiki; the volunteers talked to the residents. Mitta volunteer Mrs. Neoh sings "Hock Kien" songs to cheer up the inmates. Angela as always loved by many, joined in the laughters & jokes without having to use loud speaker; Angela brightens up the place with her ever-smiling face and sharp voice.
Volunteers on duty send Loving Kindness and Reiki the residents every Tuesday morning from 10am to 12 noon. We noticed from their faces that the residents of Pure Lotus Hospice look forward to our weekly Tuesday visit. The love and compassion shown by Mitta volunteers send out a message that Mitta cares for them.
Lately, I noticed that the lump on Mdm. Yeo’s hand is much softer and has shrunk in size!!! Reconfirmed this with Mitta volunteers there, YES, they too noticed it.
Mitta volunteers, all of you have done a great job. Sadhu…to you.

Ending Sufferings
In our daily lives, living in real World, we often get agitated without realising it.
Bhante shared with us, how to deal with it.
- Be Aware
- Accept whatever has risen,
- Aware of feelings, look into our body sensations
- Just Looking without Reacting.
- Be calm and investigate the causes of the "unwelcome visitors"
When we meditate, we have to be natural and dont force. We will be wiser in time to come.
Bhante Kumara, gave a simili:- "A pool of Water."
Beneath the pool of water is thick mud. When the pool is stirred, the mud floats up and make the water muddy. If the water is muddy, seeing with clarity is impossible. To end our suffering we have to see and understand the causes, like looking at the base of the water.
When we are angry, we have chatterings in our mind. These chatterings are being manifested in our thoughts. The more we manifest, the stirring goes on, as such, we cannot see the causes.
The night i returned from the retreat, i was full of energy and couln't sleep. I mediated while my husband took a short rest. When he woke up, i was still sitting quietly. Without knowing that i was meditating, he asked me a few questions. At first, i anwered him, as he asked more and more, i got agitated and my tone was not so pleasing.
Immediately, my son asked me "Mom why are you forcing yourself to meditate? Bhante taught us to be Aware of our surroundings" Reflecting on it, my son is right. Just be Aware and don't force into meditation. We can learn from anyone regardless of age and gender. So let us share and learn from each other.

Mitta Quilters / Patch Work
Hello from Mitta QuiltersWe, Mitta Quilters, have been meeting for several months this year. We started off with some lessons on patchwork and quilting which resulted in a few pieces of patchwork made for Friends at the Centre to keep them warm during Reiki sessions.
Our aim is to make items from the beautiful fabrics donated to us in order to raise funds for the Centre. The small enthusiastic group of ladies have produced bags, purses, glass covers, wall-hangings, coasters and a range of attractive items that are especially great as gifts. We are able to price them at an affordable range as workmanship and materials are free.
More volunteers are needed to join us at our sewing sessions. We meet on the last two Saturdays of each month from 2pm to 5pm. Do not shy away even if you think you do not enjoy needlework. We will soon get you sewing in no time at all. We assure you an afternoon full of laughter and fellowship, not to mention the food that people very generously bring along to share.
See you soon. Do have a look at our products too.

Cancer
~ What is Cancer?
> Cancer is the general term used to prescribe the group of illnesses in which cells are growing in an uncontrolled and purposeless way within the body.
> The body is made up of many types of cells each with special tasks to perform. During life, body cells are replaced or reparired when they become worn out or damaged. For this to occur cells divide and grow in an orderly manner. Cancer develops when these cells have lost the ability to stop growing and they continue to grow forming masses and growths called Cancer.
> Cells of this lump may be Benign or Malignant. Benign tumours are self contained and do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumours are not self-contained and easily break away from the original or primary tumour invading neighbouring tissues and organs or spread to other parts of the body.
WHAT CAUSES CANCER
> The causes of cancer are not yet fully understood. However genetic changes or mutation caused
by chemicals, radiation and viruses that we are exposed to may be responsible.
> While genetics certainly play a role in Cancer development, certain environmental factors
contribute in a major way to our chance of getting Cancer.
SOME ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CANCER DEVELOPMENT
> LIFE STYLE FACTORS
~ Cigarette smoking
~ Diets high in fat
~ Smoked or salted meat and fish
~ Alcohol abuse
~ Obesity
~ Lack of physical activity

~ Certain chemicals (arsenic, abestos, benzene and vinyl chloride)
~ Certain infections (HIV, Human Papilloma Virus, Epstein-Barr Virus, Helicobactor Pylori, Hepatitis B and C)
~ Occupational hazards (working in uranium mines and abestos factories).
~ Ultraviolet radiation from sunlight.
> CONGENITAL CONDITIONS
~ Fanconi’s Anemia
~ Down’s Syndrome
> WHY DOES HAVING CANCER MAKE A PERSON FEEL SICK?
> Most typesof Cancer release chemicals that make a person feel ill. These chemicals called cytokines are released into the blood causing flu like symptoms, fevers, chillis, sweats,
fatigue, anorexia (loss of appetite) nausea and vomiting.
> One of the cytokines called Tumour Necrosis Factor is associated with cachexia / muscle wasting or loss of weight. These symptoms are the ones that often bring the person with cancer to the doctor’s attention in the first place.
> POSSIBLE WARNING SIGNS OF CANCER
> A new lump or thickening in any part of the body.
> A sore that does not heal.

> EARLY DETECTION OF CANCER
EARLY DETECTION
~ The earlier a Cancer is detected, the better the treatment options and the greater
the chance of a cure.
~ Have a regular medical check-up, at least once a year.
~ If you have any unusual signs or symptoms, consult your doctor without delay.
> WOMEN
~ Have a Pap Smear once in every 2 years, starting from the age you become sexually active.
~ Examine your breasts monthly to feel for any lumps or other changes
(breast self-examination).
~ Ask your doctor to examine your breasts at your annuall medical check-up.
~ If you are more than 40 years of age, baseline mammogram must be done.
Regular check-ups are done accordingly.
~ Talk to your doctor about any family history of Cancer.
> MEN
~ Have a medical check-up once a year.
~ Talk to your doctor about urinary problems
~ Examine your testicles monthly by feeling or any lumps or other changes.

TREATMENT OF CANCER
> Many Cancers can be cured if diagnosed and treated early.
> The main methods of treating Cancer are:
~ Surgery is the cutting out and removing of the cancerous growth from the body together with a margin of normal tissue.
~ Radiotherapy is the use of radiation to destroy cancer cells.
~ Chemotherapy is the use of many different types of drugs to destroy cancer cells.
~ Hormone therapy alters the hormone balance in the body to alter the rate of growth of tumours.
Often one or more of these treatments may be used depending upon the type of Cancer,
where it is the age of the person and the general state of health.

Reiki
Reiki is not massage or ref. Reiki is reflexology. Reiki is an energy healing system and not manipulative system. Reiki energy is the energy of love.
Reiki works to heal at the level of our energy to the root of any disease, imbalance or disharmony.
Energy fields emitted by the body is becoming more popular now with the advent of alternative medicine and New Age philosophies. Reiki is intelligent and heals what is needed even if you consciously don’t know what you need.
The recipient draws the right amount of energy to the place where it is needed.
Reiki does not harm any one, it always provides help in a safe and natural way.
Reiki helps healing a physical illness, emotion, spiritual development.
Relaxation is probably the primary reason that people try Reiki. After Reiki , we feel
calmer. Different people have different reaction from Reiki
