At a glance "Ending Suffering" Workshop June 27th 2009

Posted by PicasaThe workshop on" ENDING SUFFERING" by Bhante Kumara on Saturday, 27 June 2009 was interesting and beneficial. Bhante's vast knowledge on many aspects of life and how to overcome suffering, his beliefs and experiences commanded the silent attention and appreciation from all of us.His ideas and opinions regarding the cause of afflictions and how "to educate rather than to medicate which only reduces symptoms but not to extend life" had been thought provoking. Besides this, many of us will remember his advice on how we should not respond to provocation which we can control.
Triple "SADDHU" to Bhante, & the organising team for selflessly and jointly contributing to the successful holding of a wonderful and enlightening talk.

Sharing of experieces or daily encounter (if you need feed back) write your thoughts or experiences in the "Knowledge Sharing" category. There are comments in the column on other subjects and let us slot in there.
Hope we are able to touch & help our friends.

When we perceive something
not true to be true, we live our
lives full of suffering. Only
when we see clearly what is
true as true, can we then make
better choices leading to less
suffering.

Well said anonymous ~
"Only when we see clearly what is
true as true, can we then make
better choices leading to less
suffering."

Have you contemplated and could you give an example?

My mother in law has been asking one of her sons to visit her. Until today, he is not available. I could feel and see her thoughts of wanting yet not achieved. She is "suffering" inside. She is not seeing reality as it is.

Using what i have learnt, i shared with her. Dont know whether she accepts it or not Or she still clings to her thoughts. When we are able to understand, reality as is is we are able to "let go" and can say that we have end one dissatisfied thought pattern.

That was why the title of the workshop is "Ending Suffering"

We live in a world of illusion caused by both ignorance and craving. We seek pleasurable things (kamma tanha), cling to those pleasurable feelings (bhava tanha) and always try to push away the unpleasurable feelings (vibhava tanha). So we are stuck in this 31 planes of existence for a long, very long time. Buddha gave us a good prescription to get out of this entanglement. With mindfulness and wisdom, we can see clearly the impermanent nature of both this body and mind. This will help us to reduce our attachment which is the cause of all our suffering. We learn to accept things as they are right now, and not what we expect them to be. When we expect things not to change and be a certain way, the nature is such that things will change and hence we suffer. Our dhamma practice will progress if we contemplate this way (using wise attention ie yoniso manisakara).

p/s learning to accept things as they are does not mean that we are passive and become victims to circumstances. We accept what is as what is without adding all the emotional baggages which does not help the situation. When we begin to accept things or persons as they are, our minds are no longer unbiased (with the likes and dislikes) and we can deal with the matter more objectively.

Anoymous,
How you do practise thro your daily life, like to share with us?

I was waiting inline to pay my cheque on the machine. The front person had a number of cheques to clear. We were all queuing up

I was getting a bit "ressless" wondering whether my car is blocking others. I was aware of my feeling and applied what bhante has taught us.
"what is the reality" - the waiting line is long and there is nothing much i can do. So why not just relax and look at the people.

It's good to have this type of workshop once in a while and I definitely benefit from it as I can now do not expect anything much in life and whatever I gain or have is definitely a bonus in life.We must remember that if we cannot do much to change it, then we have to accept it with open heart and be happy always!!!

Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu.
